My Lack of Social Life

“There are things magicians and jugglers don’t want to talk about.”  This line from the description of Doug Stafford’s one man show strikes deeper than expected.  Through a steady stream of jokes, juggling, and magic, Doug reflects on awkward moments in his life, explains the difference between “your children” and “your kids,” and illustrates the challenges of being a Dungeons and Dragons player while serving in the U.S. Navy.  He also demonstrates the risks of the Chubby Bunny game, how to properly escalate a performance as a juggler, and what can be done with an air pump and a piece of latex.  After all of this ridiculousness, he ends on a heartfelt and serious note, which is cleverly foreshadowed throughout the performance, though you won’t realize this until afterward.

Doug walks a fine line of PG-13 humor and child-like playfulness, with moments of earnest sincerity.  He is a good magician and a stellar juggler.  Magic-savvy audience members may not be fooled by some of his tricks, but others will appreciate them.  And happily, there are opportunities for audience participation.  His juggling is fantastic, with one highlight of the show involving a stack of cigar boxes, impressively manipulated with balance, strength and dexterity.

This is a wonderful performance from a talented U.S. veteran, featuring outstanding juggling and fun magic, with an important message about the world of entertainment.  It will surprise you and make you think, just like a great Fringe performance should.
